On “Aum/Om:”
In a nutshell, Aum is a sound (intonation rather) that symbolizes the underlying vibration that created and permeates everything. Interestingly enough, AUM is made up of four syllables, the first three being Ah+Uh+Mm and the last being silence. The symbol and the sound of Aum is undeniably the central pillar of Hinduism and a focal point of Hindu traditions and literature. It is not separate or different from God. The significance of AUM is wide and deep and has been the subject matter of discussion in the Upanishads, Vedas, Bhagvad Gita and other religious scriptures. For more information on this sacred sound and symbol please refer to this excellent "Article on Om."
Omkaar Temple:
We are very fortunate to have the first Hindu temple in North America being named after the mantra “Aum” – the Omkaar Temple. The temple is currently in the early stages of development and will be constructed in Fort Wayne, IN by the family of Dr. Jyothirmai Reddy under the guidance and blessings of Poojya Guruji Shivacharya Sri Kumaraswamy Dixitar of Sri RajaGanapathy Temple (Swedesboro, NJ). The temple’s primary deity will be the Pancha Mukha Shiva Linga. Pancha Mukha Shiva Linga is a powerful symbolism, a reflection of a great reality that encompasses all supreme deities. This form represents the Universe and all its creation, its life and itself as a whole in all directions. Along with Pancha Mukha Shiva Linga the other deities who will adorn this temple are: Parvathy (Ambaal), Ganapathi, Murugan, Balaji (Perumal), Padmavathi, Lakshmi, Sriram Parivar, Hanuman, Krishna, Radha, and the Nava Grahas. The Yantras, made in gold, for all these deities have been made to strictly adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Shaastras and have been blessed by spiritual leaders like Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Acharyas of Sringeri, Kanchi Mutts in India as well as religious leaders from holy places like Manasarovar, Kathmandu and Nepal. The temple is expected to be completed in 2012.
